2018 Australian 1 Oz Bird of Paradise Silver Coin
This Australian silver coin is minted by The Perth Mint, weighs one ounce, was issued in 2018, with a mintage of 50,000, a diameter of 40.6 mm, 99.99% silver, and has a face value of one dollar, making it legal tender in Australia. It comes in a plastic capsule.
Description of the Silver Coin:
The coin features a bird of paradise endemic to northeastern Queensland. The bird of paradise is famous for its beautiful plumage and is often associated with the island of New Guinea, where local tribes use its splendid feathers as currency and wear them during cultural ceremonies. A notable example is the Victoria's riflebird. Known as "duwuduwu" to the indigenous Yidinji people, this bird was documented by Scottish naturalist John Macgillivray in 1848 and subsequently named after Queen Victoria, the reigning monarch of the United Kingdom.
In color, the male bird bears a resemblance to the uniforms of contemporary British riflemen, which is purportedly the reason for its common title. Primarily velvety black, its plumage includes areas of iridescent greenish-blue, purple, and bronze, which are used to great effect during its dramatic courtship dance.
This elaborate display involves a series of nodding, weaving, and flapping movements. As a dramatic finale, the bird raises its head high while spreading its wings skyward, making a dramatic appeal to attract a mate.
Design:
The reverse of the coin depicts a Victoria's riflebird perched on a branch with its wings outstretched and its mouth wide open. The design includes the inscription "AUSTRALIAN BIRD OF PARADISE" and The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark.
The obverse of the coin features the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, the monetary denomination, and the year date 2018.
